hammer a socket over it and remove it. will wreck the lock nut but you'll be able to remove it

won't work, the bolts on my car are specially designed to stop people doing exactly that in the video.

its like an outer shell on the bolt that just spins round, so if you did get a grip on it you wouldnt get very far, its designed so you HAVE to use your locking nut key.

If the locking nuts are like you describe, im sure they arent fiat ones.

I went to change my rear pads at the weekend and my adapter/key broke and had to do just as scottie said, but didnt have any spare sockets to hand to do it. Garage relieved me of £25 to do all four. the mechanic used 6 sockets to get the buggers off.

The fiat ones have little grooves running down the side, they dont spin freely. A garage will be able to sort it for you though as they have special tools designed for removing them.

    Good luck

You can buy the special tool to remove them for approx £25 from Halfords and motor factors, most places ask for ID etc due to the nature of the tool, (Bit like VRM plates), but once you;ve used it you could sell it on, or hire it out, or keep losing your locking key so you can get your moeny worth out your tool etc etc
