Well, the general guide I think is every 5 years or 50,000 miles, whichever's sooner. I've just had mine changed as although it's only just passed 38,000 miles, it's almost 6 years old, so wanted to get it done to make sure.
My mate with the Pug 1.1 106 is still on his original belt and it's well past 120,000 miles. Plus, he thrashes the arse off it every chance he gets, so what it says in the manual isn't always accurate. Of course, it can just come down to blind luck.
I reckon the guide parameters I mentioned earlier are precautionary, but then some people say you should get it changed more frequently than that. Personally I think it can be down to the way you drive and the type of driving you do that determines the wear of the belt, so it's up to you if you feel you need it done.
It can also be advisable to get the waterpump done at the same time as the belt. Not essential, but can often be a good thing to get done as others may agree. All in cost for my 1.2 was a little over the £200 from an independent.
the water pump isnt needed unless you really want to do it on the 1.6 as its driven my the aux belt and not the cam belt so can be replaced at a later date without removal of the cam belt.
i changed my 1.6 last week (i also done a guide if your hands on). my belt at 80k was still ok and probo would have been for anther 10k. BUT i think it had stretched slightly as when i timed it up the original belt went slightly slack accross the cams and accross 20 teeth it was approx 1/2 tooth out compaired to the new belt. result is my car is now breathing much easier and there are no flatspots.
the fiat manual states 72k but im now gona do the belt only at 36 k and complete kit at 72 k to be on the safe side. IF you have no written proof of when the belt was done, ie service manual stamp or a sticker in the car somewhere - get it done without fail. I once bought a car that the previous owner said it had, had the cam belt changed (ford sierra) only weeks before, i didnt trust him and decided to do it my self, luckly i did because it was about to go.

I just like giving out advise if I know something about the subject...show off what limited knowledge I have. Though yeah, should've pointed him toward the sticky![]()
