You could still get away with using a 10w 40 and save yourself a few bob if you wished..

10w/40 is a multigrade ..the other is a fully synthetic thinner oil for lower temps and easier starting..although the important factor is its also a 40 oil which hold its viscosity at high temps as well..

What does 10w-40 mean..?: Motoring Technical matters forum

The reason I went for the 5w40 was it costs the same as the 10w40 where I bought it CES Crewe - CES UK - Car Parts - Exhaust and Catalyst Experts and it was way cheaper than halfrauds.

So on my next service should I just get some 10w40?? Sorry I keep asking

    Cool Re: 1.2 Engine oil

There have been issues with the 1.2 and 1.4 engine regarding a dieseling sound on start up ..some say they went over to a thinner oil to stop the noise while others say it did sod all to my engine and the noise still continued after using the wide range..the main problem has been to do with the hydraulic lifters on the engines and regular servicing and an occasional flush now and again should be all thats necessary to keep an engine in good condition..if you can get the 5w/40 for the same price as the 10w/40 and dont want the inconvenience of the six monthly services then by all means continue with its use..what ever you do and this applies to all..dont mix a multigrade with a fully synthetic ..they just dont mix..also whatever you use in the engine then use the same to top up with..I am fussy about oil and have always stuck to these two simple rules ..

That makes sense............Since I've owned the beast she gets serviced twice a year by my mechanic and I am using the same oil DriveTec 5w40. I had that diesel sound at start up when I bought her but since I have been having her serviced she's been fine. Many thanks Phil

Yep thats always been my slant on things as well ..I dont believe a car can go 12K miles with out a service in between..I might be old fashioned but this has worked well for me now for many years so I stick to it..
