Timing belt change intervals
All timing belts should be changed every four years or 36,000 miles whichever comes sooner. These intervals have been revised by the belt manufacturers.
Whatever else is being quoted is either outdated or incorrect.
At the same time belt tensioners and where applicable the variators should be changed. This is particular of importance as quite a number of belts were snapping with the old intervals and none of the engines in Stilos are safe.

I thought the 1.4 16 valve petrol engine was interference-free and that no valve damage could occur if the timing belt snapped. Is this not so?

Re: Timing belt change intervals
So, if the belt went in a Jtd (115Kw 8v) P, then it would be "ok", compared with if it was the 150bhp (mJtd 16v) model?

All I can find on the web is a recommendation to inspect the belt at 36000 miles and change it if it looks worn or damaged. Otherwise leave it until 72000 miles before changing it. The Gates website doesn't list Fiat in its search facility for belt recommendations. I don't know what Dayco says.
