noise from clutch
i currently have a noise problem from the clutch. when i start the car and its ideling there is a noise (sounds like a noisy tappet), although its not a tappet. when i engage the clutch the noise goes and the engine idels fine and normal but when i release the clutch the noise starts again.
i have tried to look at the car to narrow the noise down and it sounds like its coming from the gearbox, so i have an idea what it is but i was just wondering if anybody else had an idea and to really see if anyone else came up with the same diagnosis as i did.
if anyone could advice i would most appreciate it.

Did you find this post helpful?
Re: noise from clutch
it could be a number of things, but i would suspect the thrust bearing if the noise quiets when under load, and tbh i wouldnt worry about it as you will change the thrust bearing when you do a clutch change.
mine became rattlely on my wifes car before it finally gave up the ghost.
usually though they do squeek when you apply load.
also the injectors over time on the 1.6 start to make a sort of tappety noise, again nothing to worry about just normal wear and tear.
keep an eye on things, ie is your clutch heavy (they should be very light on the 1.6 when the become heavy its a good sign they are worn out).

Re: noise from clutch
the clutch was changed last july so its only 7 months old, its not the injectors as the noise is coming from the gearbox area. no my clutch is not really heavy just the same as normal my stilo is a 1.4.
like i said the clutch was changed in july last year so would the garage fix this under the warranty, also would it come under the warranty of the clutch.
thanks craig.

Re: noise from clutch
Just to confirm what ROY has said ..does sound like its a thrust /release bearing from the description..are you certain the garage inserted a new one when when they fitted the clutch..I have known garages in the past to cut a few corners and tell you they have but actually haven't..
Only way to really get to the bottom of this is for the same garage to investigate the noise..if they fitted a new thrust and its gone then this should be replaced under warranty..but I doubt if this will cover labour charges as well..

Re: noise from clutch
I took the car in to mr clutch yesterday and they said it could be a wheel bearing or the drive shafts. So I let them ramble on and then left, then half an hour later I rang them and said I had a second opinion and it couldn't be the bearing nor drive shaft as it is making the noise when the vehicle is standing still so now they are replacing the clutch next week. Bloody garage just trying to fob me off so they don't have to pay for the repair.
Thanks for the help people, most appreciated.

Re: noise from clutch
yeah they can be swines, anything to get out of repairing work they failed to do correctly in the first place. blooming drive shaft yeah right!! ive yet to hear a tappity noise from a drive shaft, a gringing noise - or clicking on lock but not tappity... numptys. i bet they left the old thrust bearing in.... which really dosnt make sence as they come with the kit and the box is off anyways. maybe they couldnt get the old one off as they can be a bit of a swine to remove but not impossible.
i hope they are changing it free of charge for you, especially if they supplied and fitted the clutch!.
this is the reason why i try to do all my major work on my cars myself, this way i know the jobs done correctly and wont need to be revisted unless there is a componet failure.
let us know the outcome
thanks

Re: noise from clutch
I had the car in Tuesday and they did the job. When I picked it up I asked them what the problem was and they said thrust bearing, guess what the noise has now gone. They also said when they changed the gear oil which they did for free it was abit silver. Also they are saying the coggs are abit lose.
Either way they did the job and it was the thrust bearing.

Re: noise from clutch
excellent news mate, i thought it would be the thrust from experiance. Did they charge you for the job?? they shouldnt have done.... i would have been angry anyways for having to have the job done twice.
Having a new clutch in the stilos really change the car, when i done ours over the years they clutch pedals become VERY light, before hand they were usually heavy but un noticed as they get heaver over time.
saying that my oil burner has a much heaver clutch than the wifes 1.6, you only need to breath on hers and in moves (the clutch pedel that is !!).
