My Oil Is Running Out Daily ! ?
hey peeps,
i threaded a while back about my oil light coming on when i cornered and i put it down to a sensor problem. well recently i was in Liverpool and my oil light was on whenever i cornered, braked or accelerated fast. so i checked the dipstick and it was bone dry.
so i fills her up, put a load in. i drove the next day with no warnings, the day after i get another warning. i check the dipstick and its bone dry !! again ! within 24 - 48 hours !
so i conversed with my dad on the matter and he says it can be 3 things, either the oil is leaking into the water which would turn it a black nasty color which it hasnt.
or the oil getting burnt in the engine which would result in a bluish smoke from my exhaust, which there isnt.
or its leaking from the sump, which i havent checked because its either too dark or wet or i cant be arsed. hopefully its a leak, i hoping i get down there and find the sump plug loose. anyways, if anybody has any other ideas on what it is let us kno. i'll write back on what i find when i ... go down on her !

Re: My Oil Is Running Out Daily ! ?
is it a 1.6 by any chance?, my 1.6 was needing a oil topup every few days before i sussed out what was wrong.
i was costing me a fortune in oil at one point, what i found by accident was my oil filter had two pin pricks in it, the filter was only fitted a couple of months before and thats when the problems arose in my case. i found my problem by accident as i was working on lower wish bone at the time and the car was in the air, by chance i started up the car when i was under her and the mrs was suppose to turn the steering. by chance she hit the accelerator and i recieved a fine mist of oil in my face, no sign of leaks before hand. just a dodgy oil filter in my case
its a good idea to also check your oil filter as well, sometimes (ive seen this a few times) they work loose and where they are it may not be apparent that oil is going that way, just get a old rag and turn it clockwise to see if its tight, if it moves easily and tightens up then hopefully you have solved the problem.
do you have your under engine shield present or not if so check that for any excess oil, if not are you leaving oil marks when parked up?.
have you checked your dipstick and oil cap for any scummy residue? (head gasket)
there are a lot of areas to check, even the oil sensor are prone (from experiance) to leak oil,.
good luck i hope you track the problem
keep us posted

it is a 1.6, i'll check the filter like you said tonight maybe and have a look. i noticed where i parked once there was an orangey stain the snow underneath, but i couldnt put it down to my car because i park in the same spot as a rusty old vectra. i'll let you know what i find

Re: My Oil Is Running Out Daily ! ?
you would get bluish smoke only in that case if you would have a jtd as far as i know...

Re: My Oil Is Running Out Daily ! ?
Right, Burning oil = Blue smoke + excessive smoke and a strong possiblity of "After Run2 i.e The car continues to run after you turn her off, due to the oil in the cylinders combusting.
Check your Spark plugs - remove and check to see if they are excessively dirty / oily.
Check expansion tank for signs of oil.
Check Sump plug is tight and a good seal - If you tighten it, takle her for a run, then check it again, Any oil around the plug etc
Check oil filter, is it loose?, Was it changed properly, you need to apply some fresh oil to the filter rubber seal before installing it to ensure a good seal, if his wasn;t done teh seal will not be affective. (You will be best buying a new filter if this hasn;t been done, DONT just lube up the existing one, as teh seal si compromised through dry installation.
Clean sump and check its overall condition- run the car (as per sump plug) then check for any leakage, a cracked / damaged sump is expensive, BUT can be repaired (Let me know if this is the case, as a certain crosshairs has Alloy brazing kit :) )
Check the above and report back
I'm putting money on a simple solution. (Finger crossed)

Re: My Oil Is Running Out Daily ! ?
Dont forget to check for mayonnaise when topping your oil up. The coolant can mix with the oil causing it to emulsify and it turns white. But the oil may not necissarily enter the coolant so you wouldnt always notice it in the expansion tank.
My car goes through a bit of oil, but its becuase it never gets run properly and does lots of stop/start short trips. But saying that my oil consumption is nowhere near as high as yours.
Hope you get it sorted

Re: My Oil Is Running Out Daily ! ?
i suspect a cracked sump/oil pan, if this is the case a temporary fix is uses a bar of soap, rub it into the crack, wipe off excess oild/soap and use chemical metal to cover the hole/soap.

i thought scottie is to be trusted, but if he's a ex con, then i'm not gonna rub anything on my sideskirts

Re: My Oil Is Running Out Daily ! ?
oh haha crossy if you rub soap in it the soap will form a barrier against the oil with the chemical metal, if you just put chemical metal on it, it will "weap" and oil will slowly drip out. temporary fix that works.
i've only been locked up once and that was for about 4 hours while i waited for a mate to come with bail money, lol damn irish police didnt take lightly to me speeding.
