Thing is, if I think what has happened, has happened. Its extrememly rare, as in like, never really happens but people theorise about it..
My old 156 had a knackered variator, so did my punto hgt (same 1.8 as yours), engine just sounded a bit rattly thats all. But get it changed when you can, really makes a difference to the way it drives.

When you consider what the cost might be to recon a head and the consequence of possible other damage then this is looking like a better option or one you might want to think about..
they chuck the box in free.. [not really] but nice to have incase poop happens..

Re: Ooer.. broken cambelt
True, it's definately something I want done, but it's the actual cost of it and it would make more sense to do it when the cambelt needs changing as it can be done all in one lol.
I'm glad it's rare but it's a bugger that yours gets given the burden of it!

Re: Ooer.. broken cambelt
Well just popped in to the garage on my way to work, hes compression tested 3 of the 5 cylinders and we have equal compression across them, good stuff!! The battery ran out so its on charge at the moment having the other 2 done. So we shall see.
Thaks for the link on the engine phil, if it comes to it I think I will buy something like that and stick the selespeed away for a rainy day. The only other thing I was thinking of is if the cylinder head needed reconditioning would be do have some headwork done at the same time - but looks like that might not be needed!
Ill keep you posted.

Re: Ooer.. broken cambelt
Good stiff Dan and if its got compression on three then lets hope its got the same on the other two when it comes to rest time..valves ain't to bad its worse when you have cracked seats and damaged guides [head damage ] that when it gets expensive..but all in all and overhaul will do the car a world of good..keeping all my bits and bobs crossed for a happy solution..

Re: Ooer.. broken cambelt
Well, good news, if you can call it that..
We have compression on all 5 cylinders, so thats good. It would seem my own diagnosis was correct, the internals of the variator have self destructed meaning that turning motion on the pulley was not actually being transferred to the inlet camshaft itself. So looking at a new variator, labour, cambelt, full oil and filter change just in case. Kerching!
The bitch is that the variator on the 2.4 is different to that used on the Alfa t-sparks and the Fiat 1.8vis / - so its like twice the price. Cheapest I can find is shop for parts and you are looking at £180+VAT including 10% FF discount. Ouch!
So, really guys. If youve got a 1.8/2.4, and you think your variator might be on the blink, get it changed ASAP! I was very lucky, I could have been looking at 10bent valves, headwork, variator, and god knows what else!
Ill keep you posted.

Re: Ooer.. broken cambelt
Well Im going to get the old variator back and take it apart, seen as its never really happened to many people before.
I just really need my car back, got far too much on to be car-less.

Re: Ooer.. broken cambelt
Cheap and nasty internals of the variator leads to premature failure I know of a case were they were being rebuilt with bronze internals but that petered out and was abandoned through a bad supplier of the parts ..he always had an excuse as to why you could never get hold of him /not enough old ones to repair etc etc and most of the time didnt return PM's/emails
..also i wouldn't mind betting that its an oil flow problem thats caused it in the first place..glad to see its firing on all 5 tho dan bett that came with a bid sigh of relief when you were told that
If you get no luck with it try here for a new one..i think they used to sell them..
