Cam Belt Change 1.2
Hi All, Finaly getting around to changing my Timing belt Stilo 1.2 03 Plate. 69k Miles (yes im worried) leaking water (topped up water twice in last month and a puddle under car 10-20cm each day ) its leaking from around the oil filter, checked inside the top of the timing cover cannot see any water. No creaming in the oil filler cap.
Hoping that it the leak is coming from the water pump.
I've read several guides on changing the belt (altho can only find one on the 1.2) some mention special tools (£150) and some do not.
Have some questions before I tackle the job.
When you set engine to TDC, Do you remove the spark plugs? (assuming that you need too, so no compression and that will not cause the cam's/crank to rotate when belt taken off)
Do i need special tools mentioned? (if i tipex belts, count teeth etc)
Any other advice or direction, Regards Deet

Re: Cam Belt Change 1.2
i didnt even bother with mine had a full kit installed
i felt the problems i could have caused over weighed the cost to have it change professionally.
good luck to you anyway fella

Re: Cam Belt Change 1.2
i also need my cambelt changed, just havent got around to it
i dont think you'll need any specific tool just a tipex pen to mark the cam pulleys and crank pulley
the 1.2 is a basic enough engine with no Variator to worry about so i think you'll get away okay with the basic tools.
your leaking water problem does sound like its coming from the waterpump. i'd get it changed asap

Re: Cam Belt Change 1.2
First thing to look at is if the water pump is actually leaking and to strip the car down to the point where you CAN see the pump..if its leaking the tell tail water stains will be there you can bet ya bottom dollar..ALL stilo's need the use of cam locking tools to hold the cams shafts still while the cam belt is changed ..yes even the 1.2..and if you have read many guides then you will already know the tippex'd whit marks dont do the job on these cars and many others these days..[proceed at your own peril ] removing the plugs DOES help the engine to turn over due to the lack of compression and helps you check when the timing marks are lined up by probing No 1 cylinder with a long object like a piece of cane or thin rod for TDC..its false economy to not fit the whole kit because some where down the road you bet ya bottom dollar the tensioner might fail taking the engine with it..like wise the water pump ..if its on its way out then it has to be done but if the milage is high on the car then a water pump change should also be considered anyway for the same reason as the tensioner..what happens is the old pump will be under a different tension from the new belt and that will invarably cause it to fail in the long run because of it..cost of the change can be high from some garages but the 1.2 is one of the more straight forward ones so you might want to in this case consider a garage to get it done correctly..

Re: Cam Belt Change 1.2
For reference, mine cost a little over £200 for the full cambelt change and waterpump replacement last year, including labour. It was of course at an independent

Re: Cam Belt Change 1.2
cheer's for the help, Was planning to change the belt, tensioner and water pump anyway, On reading about the kits, you actuly set the engine to MDC on 1.2
Would i be correct in saying.......
Get the cam locking tool's (£30 ish), get the engine to correct position (ie pistons at MDC, Fit Cam locking tools) put car in gear (to prevent crank from turning), mark cams/ crank for reference and replace belt, tensioner and water pump, recheck marks, rotate engine by hand several times just to check
regards Deet
P.S. If anyone near belfast has cam locking tools and would lend them to me let me know..........

Oh right. Does the 1.4 not have any sort of Variable Valve timing then? I always thought that it did, lol.
