Worried about a little noise
Hi folks!
It's been a while since my last visit... (ok... a biiiiig while)
I didn't had great news to tell you... (I've scratched the car twice...
for me)
But the car is good from the minor scratches...
What recently worries me is this...
Quite simple...
When idle... the engine (the good old 1.6 petrol!) seems to be doing a little bit more noise...
Rpm's at idle are the same... the pace seems the same... only more louder... almost making you remember a diesel...
If you hear with hood up... you cant identify clearly if it's timing belt... or camshaft... If you get closer seems normal... if you step far away... seems more noisy...
And... on the road.... all normal... same fuel consumption... same power/torque at low rpm's...
Oil is ok...
Im just wondering... if I should be worried about or it is just me wanting a car with almost 9 years to be sounding like new... :P
PS: (I promisse I will be visiting the forum more times...) :D

Re: Worried about a little noise
have you tried using an engine flush that you add to the oil before oil change?
i used it before when my engine seemed "tappety" and the noises cleared up.

Re: Worried about a little noise
Car is now with almost 60K miles. It has now helix 5w40, and before that it had same with 10w40.
Soon it will get another oil change... I will see if it makes some difference...
I find hard to beleive it's the hydraulic tappets because when I get my ear close to the engine... that area seems to be "singing" good...
As I said before... it's kind of feel the idle a little bit louder... not with a 100% smooth idle... but also not exactly tapping...
Good news is... I still drive it almost with a touch of the gas pedal... no need to foot down!! And foot down would mean... see the rev counter going wild!! hehe

Re: Worried about a little noise
try changng back to 10w40 mate, im not a fan of the thinner oils. i stick to 10w40 in my 1.2 with no problems.

Yeap... I guess it makes sense...
After some while... (no so many miles...) and hearing it again and again... it really sounds like if engine is a little bit "dryer"... So I guess going back to 10w40 will do the trick. within some weeks I will let you know.

Re: Worried about a little noise
Some say that Fiat and selenia looked at the 1.2 and 1.4 and upgraded the oil to a 5w 40 after some R&D but if you look at the selenia site it clearly states a 10w 40 for the engines and the cars were delivered with that grade in the engines..the R&D tosh I never believed and its never been proven to me in black and white ..Its another way to screw you for more money when the car is dealer serviced..another 10w 40 oil with the same specs should be fine for the engines I used mobil in my old fiat stilo and the old yellow panda..

Re: Worried about a little noise
I used 5w 40 on my stilo and it was by far better than 10/40 imo but maybe it's because of the mileage I was doing don't know really

After some miles back with 10w40... let me say... the noise is over!
Which means... thiner oil wasn't the best choice.
With 10w40 the sound is much more smooth. Same pace, same rpm's, but sounds smoother.
So... my 1.6 is pouring like a cat again!
