Alternator problems
Hi, can anyone tell me the best way to get the alternator out in my Stilo 2.4 Abarth?
Ive actually got the alternator off, I just cant get out of the car??? The only way I can see that it will come off is by removing the whole front of the car, which I really dont want to do.
Please tell me there is a really easy way and how to do it???? :(

Re: Alternator problems
Welcome to the forum Les..cant see why your getting problems ..once all the bolts are out electrical connection off and belt is off it should just lift out from underneath the car..

Re: Alternator problems
Thanks for the reply...
Unfortunately you cant mate, the compressor (i think its that, thats what its called in the elearning workshop manual) is directly underneath it. Aside from that, I think if it was removed you still couldnt get it out. There is simply no room. The alternator is just in a void and no matter which way it is turned there in no side that is small enough to get through any of the gaps by at least 3". In other words, I would have to make at least 3" to get it out of the widest gap.
I have the e learning workshop manual, which is pathetic, it simply shows how to undo the holding bolts and the electrical connections. It does not tell you how to get it out of the car. I really need to find someone that has actually done it, with the same model engine. There is no room what so ever with the 2.4 engine, its a joke!! Any time I want work doing on the car they want fortunes to do it as you have basically dismantle the thing to do anything.
I love the car but what a ballache should anything go wrong.

Re: Alternator problems
Ok Mate I quoted from elearn as well and yes it can be a bit hit and miss
..I guess what they would do at fiat or any other garage in this case is to remove the aircon generater first if there is no room to get the alternater out ..this is why that garage wanted £120 to get it out and back in again I guess..sorry I cant be of more help to you..

Re: Alternator problems
I still dont think there would be room if the compressor was taken out as there are bits sticking out of the engine that would block it. I think i'm going to have to take the rad, grill etc off to get it out... Thats what Im afraid of, that I dont get it back on right. My problem is, I cant drive the car to a garage to sort out because I have no electrics and the strearing wont work. I have phoned mobile mechanics but none of them want to know when they find out what car. I'm really pulling my hair out with it.
Thanks for your help anyway.
Right wheres that sledge hammer!!

Re: Alternator problems
Had another thought on this in bed last night..can the alternator be withdrawn side ways by taking out the plastic inner wheel arch..I dont like unsolved problems..

Re: Alternator problems
No it wont go past the chassis bar at the side. Ive looked and looked and the only possible way seems to be is to take of the radiator + cover, grill and metal support bar that has the bonnet catch on. Problem is, that is way beyond my mechanical capabilities. I'm really scared I will do damage to the car or forget where something went. Aside from that, I really cant see or work out things come off apart from the obvious bolts ive tried.
This is going to cost me a fortune for something that should be ridiculously easy to do.
Is this the reason they stopped making them I wonder??? I really really do love this car but if its going to be this much trouble for something that should be easy, then Ive really got to start thinking about getting something else. Ive just had 4 days of complete and utter stress. There was a guy said he would charge me £120 just to take it off, however, he could only do that if I got it to him. I cant get anyone mobile to do it. So now I'm probably left with the option of calling a mechanic that has a pick up to take to his garage, and bet it ends up costing the best part of £400/£500.
Its a joke!!

Re: Alternator problems
mate, take the front off the car.
remove the front bumper/grill
then the radiators just bolt to the chassis legs remove these bolts and the bolts @ the top
release coolant hoses and all should come out

Re: Alternator problems
I phone Fiat up, they told me the quickest way... Take the right hand drive shaft off and it will come out.. What a joke!! All that for an alternator.
I managed to get a garage to pick the car up... dont know much its gonna cost yet but I think my baby'll be going after this.
Cheers for you help anyway
Les :)

Re: Alternator problems
Blimey thats a bit extreem isnt it but not as bad as stripping the whole front off I suppose..I think they really had some very bad design problems as a whole with the stilo..you have to be a contorsionist to change the bulbs on the passenger side..good luck with the car Les..let us know how you get on in the future..
