    Default Induction Kit / Filter

Right, first off, please treat me like a complete knoob with this subject as I know naff all about it! Normally not interested in it either but here is the issue.

As some know, my Stilo is running on LPG. This entails a set of LPG injectors having being fitted behind the standard air filter. As a result one of the 3 securing/mounting points of this housing have had to be removed, and the stress of this has over 20,000miles distroyed the remaining 2 mounting points.

These 2 mounting points have been bodged to within an inch of their life with cable ties but is got to a point where its not sitting properly and the air filter housing is slowly wearing a hole in its self due to the way its sitting on the engine block.

So, having seen some of these Filter (induction is it?) kits, I'm thinking that on the basis that it doesn't sit on top of the engine block it may be better that the standard air filter housing in this application, as I'm not buying a new air filter housing anually at the cost that Fiat are charging.

So basically I need a knoob guide on how the system works, how they're fitted, the best to get (I want value but also quality). I don't want anything that's likly to use extra fuel also, but some do increase performance don't they? And they do need to be insurance declaired don't they?

Also, I don't want any strange wistling / gushing air noises that most boy racers want, and the unit MUST be capable of going up flooded farm tracks

I think I would like to see a pic of your engine bay first Jon..reason being is LPG installs can fill up places that a kit might need to be sited..ie..you might NOT be able to get it in..

CDA does come to mind as being the quietest..but have you got the room..????

All induction kits will give you a sucking noise [to some degree] open filters more than an air box design..and being able to fit a filter safely away from water is going to be difficult with an open filter application..have a search and look at carbon dynamic airboxes and try to get some dimentions and then go to your engine bay armed with a tape measure..

as PNL says Jon we need to see a pic of your engine bay, a CDA Type Kit would be perfect for your application IMO as its a closed filter box, you can get universal type jobbies that replicate the look of a CDA filter.
with regards to the flooded farm tracks i would suggest mounting the filter high in the engine bay
i have been wondering about LPG conversions all week mate. maybe i'm just dreaming but a BMW M3 on LPG would be around the same cost in fuel as my stilo? (i'm basing this on 2 litres of LPG for every litre of Petrol)

EDIT: maybe stick a bid on this?? http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/TYPE-VR-INDUCT...item4cf0cbe4cf

Thanks for the link, I've got it in my watch box on eBay.

LPG I'd have said is closer to 1.6L petrol to every litre of LPG. It all depends how its driven. Foot down 24/7 and the saving is less, LPG seems to get drunk more than petrol at high cruising of 3500rpm/4000rpm+. But if your just giving it the ocassional big one and cruising alot like me your laughing.

As for my engine bay, it does have a few differences. Hope these pics are ok or I'll have to go out in the rain and take some.

Nice clear pics Jon which is what Ihave come to expect of you..and from the looks of things there would be enough space to mount a carbon air box between battery and engine..you would have to make up a hose from air box to Throttle body and with any luck you could use a corugated one [usually supplied] to take the air supply from the original source..will need a bit of jiggery pokery but it could be done..most air boxes are around 200mm in dia so you will have to check you can get one in or find one of another dia..

Second train of thought would be to find an airbox off another stilo ..1.6 for instance and rig that to fit..location will be under the battery tray for those as you will no doubt already know..

That thought had crossed my mind. Where are they on the 1.9 DERV's? Just wondering if the 1.6's under the battery tray will be an issue due to the regulator being there?

Also I wonder where it is located on the 2.4 abarth. 2 in a local scrappy when I last went so they might still have one with the air filter housing there.

Going back to your first idea Phil, where would I get a cabon one from?

The 1.6/8 and the 2.4 and JTD are all in the same place..differance is the 2.4 and JTD have a Maf going to it so pipe sizes would be a pig to sort out and needing reducing to the air box..I have the induction tube from a 1.6 here off my old car if you need it [I think..need to check] that will have the connection on it for the crank breather pipe..not sure about the diameter of the two throttle bodies tho that would need to be checked..1.6 is 60mm and 1.4 is ..you could check that tho by taking the induction tube off the T/B on yours..where to get an airbox to ..well muppet did quite a search on this when he did his kit lets have a search and see what he came up with..[goes off and looks]

Yes, I'll have a check of what size it is on the 1.4 sometime today.

I have noticed 2002 FIAT STILO 1.6 16v AIR BOX on eBay (end time 07-Aug-10 12:40:26 BST)

Ashame they havent got a best offer option though like some listings do.
