    Default LPG Conversion

I have a Fiat Stilo 1.6 Dynamic, with the ever increasing price of petrol and the fact I drive 60 miles a day to get to and from work plus driving around to different places of work I am considering getting my car converted to LPG.

Has anyone had their Stilo converted, does anyone know of possible issues and do you feel it was worth it? :-)

    Thanks.

You've asked in the correct place. I am the only person on here that I'm aware of with a LPGed Stilo.

I had it converted in August 2009 and have done 28000miles since without any issues. Last year I was doing a 70-100mile round trip 3 times a week which was my main reason for converting. In my 1.4 I'm averaging 30-32mpg on LPG, and was doing about 35-36 on petrol. Currently equated to about 10p a mile on LPG with current prices, but was about 8p a mile when I first had the Stilo converted.

I've a BRC system (one of the leading systems along side Prinus iirc). Nice Italian system on an Italian car, not had any issues what so ever with it, and converson cost me £1200 and £50 on top for a colour coded fill up point. Not sure what places are quoting at the moment, but mine ranged from £1200-£1800/£2000!! Luckily the nearest place to me (8 miles away) was the cheapest and seemed a decent place (runs a fleet of taxis and happily showed me around a converted one, and one in the middle of a conversion).

Only down side I can think of is some insurance companies will charge you extra for it, but not alot. I paid £35 to declair it this year with admiral, where as last year I was with Quinn direct and they were not bothered.

Make sure you use an LPGA installer, who will issue a certificate of safety which some insurance companies ask for a copy of (when you send in your proof of no claims) and others just want to see if you make a claim.

Needs to be declaired to DVLA, single form, sent in with certificate, and is free to do luckily. Another small advantage is road tax is £10 a year cheaper, used to be £20 cheaper, but they've had cut backs like with everything else.

Anything else you need to know then give me a shout.

    Thanks for your reply!

As I say im seriously considering this at the moment, because of the car i know its not going to be under £1000 but that was expected.

I had to pay that much to change my address so I'll be expecting some sort of charge.

    newbie to this forum here

if you can afford the installation costs, and are close to a filling point, then go for it.

i've converted a few cars myself(range rover, land rover, astra, transit minibus), many years ago and never had any problems. i even had a small electric pump and filled the cars myself with 47kg propane bottles (which worked out to about 20p per litre from memory!!!!)

my only advice is to work out what miles you do in a week, then calculate the mpg you might expect, then work out how many litres you will need for the week, as filling up with lpg can be a pain(well, it used to be anyway) then get the tank large enough for 1 fill per week.

but that assumes you dont mind losing boot space etc.

all mine were clockwork carb cars with clockwork lpg kits, the only modern sequential lpg car i've tried was my mates dodge ram pick-up, and you would never know it was on lpg when switched over

if i didnt have a diesel vauxhall 7 seater i would still be on lpg now!!

Welcome to the forum Kev. In what way did you find filling up with LPG a pain out of interest?

were talking over 10years back now, and filling points were few and far between, especially after work etc.

the nearest 'forcourt' was just off the M6 jcn7. where as i had a local builders merchants that were selling autogas and were open on a saturday morning, hence it was so much easier to get a tank full per week etc.

also it used to take ages to fill up 80 or 90 litres with the older tanks. the newer 4-hole tanks fill much quicker so not so much of a 'pain'
