    Exclamation P0340 error camshaft/crankshaft sensor fault , how to fix

    FIAT STILO 1.2 16v

    symptoms,
    p0340 fault
    cam sensor
    crank sensor
    ecu fault
    cam sensor circuit fault
    crank sensor circuit fault


    engine starts then revs up to 6k rpm on its own then stalls.
    managment light stays on
    car runs low and power
    sometimes drives ok

    do not buy the cam sensor, do not buy a crank sensor, do not buy an ecu etc etc. its a simple problem you would struggle to realize as the cams run off one camwheel but have 2 cogs inside syncing them together. so timing appears to be ok but actually isnt.

    yes we sorted it in the end. It is the cam sync timing.

    basically both your cams run off a cog system, when the cams become out of sync they cause this problem.

    you have to take the inlet manifold off to adjust the cams and have a fiat tool to align them properly.

    i however have a good mechanic mate who is very good. We managed to do it without removing the inlet manifold.

    undo the allen keys bolts on the rocker cover. do this by grinding an allen key down to get in the gap or use a chisel to tap the grub screw to get it moving then use a magnet stick to remove it. this is were you stick the fiat tools to align the cams, now undo the cog bolts on the camshafts ends (cambelt end). stick a snap on camera through the hole where the fiat tool goes and you will see a notch in the camshaft. move the crank round until the cam grooves are equal at each side (you will see what i mean when you look at the monitor). tighten the camwheel cogs back up. do the same on the other camshaft. you are now good to go.

    so even if your mechanic checks your timing belt marks this will make no difference as its the cams that have moved leaving the cam wheel sin the correct place showing the timing to be ok when actually its not. its a bit like having vernier cams on a racing car.

    print this out and show a mechanic whos is good and he should understand it.
