Default Adding extra earthing to the abarth....

Well ive got some extra cable lying round and have been reading about earthing the car better... went and had a look at the car a minute ago but its a pain in the arse with the lack of space :bang

Ive taken a few pictures of places i think might be alright for adding the extra earths. what do you guys think..

firstly the engine; not to sure on this one as it is where the coolant pipe is connected im guessing this will earth the engine block.

Ive connected a connector there to see how it fits theres is loads of room just not sure on the heat. ( that silver thing is the connector)

Next was the the ecu and throttle body what do you think to connecting it the top right fixing point for the ecu, do yo u think it will earth the throttle body etc...

the chasis i have two places in mind, first is directly next to the battery box and the second is behind the Ecu behind some sound proofing.
    next to battery.

    behind Ecu.

Your input will be greatly appreciated. thanks guys

Do you really need to do it ??? I've 'been there' in the past with my Lancias and once you start down the dark path...... well....... if it all works why break it ???

When doing this make sure that you are not creating something like a loop, which starts with just over 180 degrees.

Also make sure that you haven't accidental intermittent earthing, which can create problems due to potential differences.

well ive connected it all up and it all seems to be running perfectly.. took it for a long drive seems to run better from start.

Pete can you explain a little more in a basic terminology.. as my simple brain does'nt understand that 180 degree thing.. lol

Also you say intermitent earthing, ive insured everything is securely fixed in place and made sure the connectors are crimped and heat warped. etc. You've got me worried now...

Interference is a pculiar thing. As soon as you have more than half a loop often interference problems start. If you should get a problem then it is in most cases sufficient to alter the routing.

Regarding internittent earthing: If the negative cables/earth cables touch anywhere along the way the chassis or other earth(ed) parts little sparks might fly creating all sorts of problems.

Many moons ago when I was testing with TVR in Blackpool a new ignition development, we had some earthing problem, which took us hours to realise. We did not understand why the car was hesitating ever so often.

    Just an observation................

..................I wouldn't run an earth cable under the Live cable from the battery! :o

If the cables chafe through, you will get a BIG spark!!

That will also give you an interference loop effect, similar to what Pete has already said.

You may be better off upgrading the existing cables and leaving the routing of the cables the same.

Another point, where you have the multiple earth connection behind the battery, you may find it beneficial to remove the existing connector and fit all the earth cables together using one large terminal!
