Re: Punto sporting, Any problems plus alloys.
Hi,
Alloys from a 2007 Punto, ie. A Grande Punto, wont directly fit your car. The stud pattern on the Mk2 is 4 x 98, the Grande Punto is 4 x 100 so you would need wobbly bolts at the very least.
You could probably pick up some 16" wheels from a Stilo and fit lower profile rubber or if you are feeling brave go for 17" ones with even lower profile rubber. You will get increased road noise for sure and degraded handling in the wet. Ebay is your best bet for 2nd hand ones.
Not much goes wrong with the 1242 engine. Check for oil leaks, that sort of thing. Make sure its service is kepty up with, especially the cambelt, just general maintainance stuff really. Some of the earlier ones show signs of rust, especially near the windscreen rubbers and on the inside of arches to make sure there isnt any rusty looking chips in the paintwork or it might turn serious over time.
Enjoy your car, and get some pics of it up. I had a 2000/W HGT and loved it.

Re: Punto sporting, Any problems plus alloys.
i run "wobbly bolts" on my stilo to get my 4x100 wheels down to the correct 4x98 pcd with no problems at all.
as for the 1242 engine its the same as i have in my stilo and its a cracking engine 73k miles of nothing but hard revving and its still going strong

Re: Punto sporting, Any problems plus alloys.
Ermmm, do you guys know what is the centre bore size for the new fiat alloys?
Also he's got a punto sporting so that's a 1368 16v :D. The engine is slightly tappety, but nothing to worry about. Just make sure you give it regular oil change :). More oil changes with slightly cheaper oil which fits the requirement is better than expensive oil and less changes.
It is a quick car so enjoy it :) And for size, i'd stick with 15" wheels, as you want to keep the raw accelations you have.
Thanks
Ming

Re: Punto sporting, Any problems plus alloys.
Grande now uses 4x100 pcd with off set of 46 iirc..bore is 56.5
Older punto's used 4x98 with a centre bore of 58.1..

Yeah meaning New Grande rims won't fit Punto MK2 even with wobbly... Unless you took the rims to a machine shop to get the centre bore enlarged.. pricey stuff

Re: Punto sporting, Any problems plus alloys.
Ming, the 2002 Sporting is a 1.2 not the 1.4
cracking little engine, keep an eye on gaskets, service it on time etc and it will be fine, tough little cookie. unlike my 1999 sporting, with a dead engine.
anyway, 16" is about as big as you want. in my oppinion, standard alloys and having it slammed to the floor is a great look.
Just a note of warning, the diff is not very strong on any of the 1.2 punto's and it will seperate in about 6months. thats what mine did. big wheels are a no no in more ways than one on the mk2, unless you get the HGT. then its got the power to overcome the extra grip and torque of bigger wheels. also, they slow you down, and thats enough for me to say NO!
Still miss my 2002 1.2 Active Sport. Great little car
