Major problems with stilo cutting out, intermittant, lumpy idle
Hey!
I'm sorry I havent had a chance to properly introduce myself yet, but I have a really big problem with a Fiat stilo we bought 3 weeks ago.
It was fine for the first week, but it has started cutting out randomly. Usually once the car has been driven for half hour, then stopped and parked for 30 mins, then come back to it, it will drive fine for 5 mins then cut out, no error messages or beeping at all. Car then starts fine.
So far i have:
- Checked D4 connector under fusebox, cleaned with contact cleaner
- Cleaned all spark plug connectors with contact cleaner
- Checked all earths in engine bay with multimeter, and cleaned all of the just to be safe
- Cleaned throttle body by removing it completely
- Changed all spark plugs
- New alternator and cambelt just before i bought the car
- Cleaned all ECU connectors with contact cleaner
Any help would be really appreciated as this is become not only a nonsense but also dangerous!
Cheers, Toby

Hi Toby. When you sy it cuts out how does it cut out? The same as if it's just been turned off? What happens if your turn it over? Any spluttering or completely dead?

Hi there. When it cuts out it's just a clean cut, like the ignition has been cut off, thats why i thought electrical. Some times the car will become unresponsive, won't accelerate, then the car just cuts out, so sometimes i get about 3 seconds warning! When it's turned over it starts fine, no errors, check ok, runs fine.
I have started to think though that the idle is a little lumpy and sometimes when you put your foot down hard to accelerate it is hesitant, and on the odd occasion it will lurch badly before then pulling away.
I might also add, that the battery cover is missing, but i have pulled the fusebox apart (never again!) and it seems dry in there.

Might be worth checking the crack position sensor. That being faulty will cause the engine to just die.

It's probably best to just change this yes? I've had a search around on Euro Car Parts but can't find it. Has anybody got a part number or a link to where i could buy this from asap! Cheers guys!

UPDATE - have fitted new crankshaft sensor, car drove fine. This morning, did an hours drive, parked the car for 5 mins, started to drive home and 15 mins later the car cuts out at 50 randomly. Bringing up erroe messages of "Loose Connection" and "Alternator Failure" and the it says high coolant temp, the needle goes off the gauge but then comkes back down to normal and the car drives fine.
Alternator was changed in May, voltages look ok from the alternator. This is doing my head in! It always seems to be once the cars been drive and parked, then started again. The car always starts again absolutely fine.
Any help now greatly appreciated guys!

How old is the battery, has it's condition been checked?

Hey. The battery looks in good condition but i can't find a date mark or recipt for it. Voltage over the battery looks ok, but apart from that no i haven't tested any further. The car hasn't cut out in ages, and then today it has done it 4 times. Sometimes when it cuts out it's now saying "Security Fault" and brings up the orangle padlock flashing nd the car cuts out. After a few mins, the car will start again fine. Sometimes you have to disconnect the battery and reconnect then it starts again. I've changes bother battery terminals and all the spade connectors to the terminals too. Cheers, Toby

Well after checking every single plug in the engine bay on the wiring loom, and cleaning just about every earth contact point in the engine bay, i managed to track down an engine bay fusebox, replaced it and not had a problem since. Just need to find a damn battery cover now!

Sounds good. Glad you've resolved it :)
