    Smile Installing XCarLink

Hi guys! I recently got one of these XCarLink CD Changer Emulator things. Thought I could upload a guide on here, even though its really simple. This is my first guide, so bare with me!

Firstly, this is what you get when you open the box. Manual, USB extension cable, mini-USB to headphone jack cable, and the main XCarLink unit itself.

Okay, lets jump straight in. Unscrew the two screws at the top of the upper glovebox.

This will allow you to remove it (with abit of a tug). It should now look something like this.

Now open the latch at the top of the lower glovebox (Or if you wanna be abit more professional, maybe cut a hole and put in a gromet?). Excuse the EEEPC by the way.

Slide the cable from the XCarLink through the latch, and up into the upper glove box area via one of the small holes at the back.

Now move to the headunit. Use the radio keys (or in this case, an old coathanger), to remove the headunit.

Reach in, and pull the cable through from the upper glovebox area.

And plug into the socket to the upper-right (as you view from the back) of the connectors.

Now push the headunit back in, push the upper glovebox back in (and screw the top back in), and let the XCarLink sit happily in the lower glove box. Maybe even stick it to the top of the glove box with some sticky velcro stuff?

    Enjoy.

Haha, my other finger is just out of shot. The XCarLink cost about £90 delivered, from their own website. So far so good, but I have noticed sometimes you need to go back and foward again for it to pick up the very first track. After that, its all good. We'll see how it goes.

Okay, after a couple of weeks using this, I guess its time to update you all on how I think it performs.
Generally its quite good. It can be a little slow loading up first thing in the morning (15seconds or so before the first song starts). Its a real shame that theres no way for ID3Tags, tho I don't think my headunit supports them either.

It also has a few quirks:

    * If you move from CD, to radio, back to CD, sometimes it'll get lost and start the CD from the begining, or sometimes it'll resume on the correct track but the track number will no longer update (for next track) until the CD is changed.

    * You can no longer turn off the headunit when CD06 is accessed! Abit of a major issue there.
    - Work arounds include turning the engine (ignition is not enough) off and on again.
    - Setting headunit to auto on and off with ignition through menu option.
    - Remove CD06 completely, and go from CD05 straight to CD07.

    * CD10 shows as CD0, I suspect CD11/CD12/etc would not work, or loop round to CD01/CD02.
