After fitting a mild cam to a 1.4 16v i found that the valves hit the piston with piston number 1 going down, but is fine with piston 1 going up (ignition stroke) The note at the bottom of page 1 says that the timing can be 180 degrees out, but says piston 1 has to be going up which renders the Note useless. Can somebody shed some light? Very confuzled. :s

Not quite sure but piston one going up is compression stroke not ignition.

Yeah technically there is no such thing as ignition 'stroke' as it ignites at TDC, but guide confuses things. And timing is not set at TDC. I think its the wording that suggests it CAN run in 2 positions when in fact it needs piston 1 going up. Find out in a few weeks. :s

There is an ignition stroke, that's the down followed after compression and then you've exhaust stroke and intake stroke.

Ignition often happens just before TDC on the compression stroke depending upon the engine and design.

Still sorry I haven't any info that you were after though :/
