Head unit trouble
Hey guys,
Went to halfords today looking for an i pod adapter for me standard tape player but they were 15 quid !! so thought ebay was the best option but on my way out of the shop in the clearance cabinat an alpine box caught my eye and so did the £99 price tag it said on the box it had dvd gps e t c and i decided to investagte and found that on the internet they retail at no less than £700 so i quickly baged my self what i thought was a bargin !! took it home i tried fitting it i connected the 2 black boxs together and the iso lead and nothing !! i was wondering as the unit has a dvd function it has a parking brake lead does this need to be connected to the brake lead in order for these types of units to even be turned on !! the model is alpine ina n333r any help would be hugely appreciated as im getting very frustrated !!
Thanks matt

Re: Head unit trouble ??For Dan

Re: Head unit trouble
No mate, the unit will come on without the parking brake wire connected.
I used to have a alpine CVA unit that was installed in 4 of my cars, all I did was connect the handbrake cable straight to gnd/chassis (black usually) at the rear of the radio - never asks then :-)
Even so, the unit should still come on even if the unit thinks the car is moving, it just disables certain functions such as viewing video, maybe more if its of dutch origin.
Make sure both the switched and permanent live connections on the radio are getting power, as your stilo wont yet have a switched live I wouldnt have thought
You can usually do this in the alpine to ISO wiring harness itself by reconfiguring the bullet connectors in it (red/yellow wires).
If you can post model numbers and stuff im sure we can help more.
Regards
Dan

Re: Head unit trouble
thanks so much for the quick replies
Not really a techy on this so will have to bare with me but the car is an 2002, original head unit fitted was the tape player one and i have tried connecting my alpine ina n333r to the two black boxes directly and they fitted !! the iso connector went in first time to ! the parking brake lead is no connected to the hu directly just a spare wire ??? what model numbers do you need !! thanks again !:)

Re: Head unit trouble
Bloody hell mate, bargain!!!
With that unit I am assuming that the handbrake cable is to stop you putting in a route or something while you are driving.. you can connect that wire to the other black wire in the alpine loom (ground, or the negative connection), this will prevent any warnings about changing things when moving..
If you look on the ISO cable/lead only one of the yellow/red wires will have a connection on the stilos connection side, you need to make sure that both the yellow/red wires are connected to this wire so its getting the power it needs.
The cables colours can usually be indentified by a sticker on the actual unit itself, or failing that in the read of the manual.
If the above sounds like a load of cuckoo best thing to do if you can is post a picture of the rear of the unit with the cables showing, so I can tell you what you need to connect to where.
Alternatively, if you live near an independent in car audio shop they may plug it in for you for a small fee to test it..

Re: Head unit trouble
The yellow wire is the permanent live, the red the ignition switched live.
So you need to make sure the alpine is getting power on both red/yellow wires to power on,
If you look at the bullet plugs(clear) near the fuse/ISO harness Alpine usually have a double width bullet socket on the power lines so you can double them up in cases like this..
So basically red/yellow into red bullet or red/yellow into yellow. They are like this as some cars have the wiring the opposite way round.
If thats not the case I would ask Halfords to plug it in and test it if you can, should be easy.. but saying that beware, Halfords employee standards do vary heavily from branch to branch.

Re: Head unit trouble
Shouldnt be...
If they have sold something as seen it should clearly state so, but the halfords near me selll things cheaper but not faulty, ive had some cheap crossovers and stuff from there myself.
If you really want the headunit I would try and get them to repair it under warranty, as for 99 quid that really is a nice quality headunit, much better than anything else you would pick up at that price point for sure.
Best of luck, let us know how you get on.

Re: Head unit trouble
Did you get the User Manual with it - the installation and connection instructions are in that.
Anyway, here is a link to download it:
