    Default Car Insurance

    Ok some advice needed
My son pranged his car Golf gt tdi ,whilst reaching down to retreive his phone, rite into a blooming bollard and now the insurance has looked at the car they have said it is not worth fixing due to the damage on the front end, mainly being that he has shifted the engine Twonk !!! the car was 1999 and was insured for £2,300
The insurance has offered him £700 i cant believe it ,they are disputing the worth of the car due to SOME SCRATCHES not to do with the prang, now i no they never pay what it is actually insured for and that you are obliged to inform them of any cosmetic changes you make ,but are you supposed to report every scratch and adjust your insurance accordinly ,their were only a couple of small scratches cos he did look after his car,Can i dispute it and what happens if an agreement is'nt reached

I hate to say it, and I know it'll take time, but read all of the small print relating to the policy.
What level of cover did he have? That may well have a bearing on how flexible the insurers might be on the compensation value of the vehicle as a write-off.
You may be able to ask the insurer to provide another assessor to look at the vehicle again, if it has a full stamped service history (not necessarily just main dealer) done at the correct intervals it demonstrates care and attention has been applied to the vehicle - check for all receipts of work done to the car.
This may help in arguing your case, but I'd be prepared for a long battle.

£700 for a GT TDI? Thats a sickener!

Contest it to the very end. Have a look around at similar condition/priced cars etc. Ive never seen a TDI for sale for less than £2500 never mind a GT TDI.

i had a 2002 GT Tdi last year it was highy modified and i got £6500 for it when i sold it. contest it and you should get more, insurance companies come in with the lowest value and hope you say yes, if you decline the offer and ask for more they will revalue it and come back with a better offer

Thanks for the replys guys ,,he has been back onto the insurance company today "more than" they should be called dont expect more than ,,, have had a troll through ebay and the cheepiest closest to milage and condition is 2.800 ,told him at the time he insured to low ,but his thinking was if car was valued lower his insurance would be cheeper ,kids you cant tell em,
He is insured fully comp ,and although service was always done ,not by a main dealer is having to pull out all receipts as he always maintained his car ,so as you say he has the proof to show correct and proper maintainance .They are going to re-look at the car this week ,but i might just get an independent to look at it also ,i still cant get my head round them deducting for small insegnificant marks ,its almost like when you get a courtesy car they have a diagram of the car and they mark down previous marks and marks when they get it back
will let you know thanks for now

I'd be providing them with copies of sales add for same type golfs etc, and ebay listings (especially auction, as they're sort of the cheapest price going and show what people are willing to pay).

Advise them that if they fail to pay out what it will cost to replace the vehicle (take not of that, not what the vehicle is worth, what it'll cost to replace as thats what they're coverinig, to put your son into a situation he was in before the accident) that you'd be writing to the MD of More than, and depending upon the MD's response within 14 days of writing to them, that you'll be issueing papers for small claims court.

Normally always works, play them at their own game!
