Will work fine. But wont help your situation.
SRS is handled by the airbag ecu,a different ECU to that of the engine, so he would need it connecting to something that would connect to that ecu.
Most garages with a launch, sun or whatever can sort it.
The handheld you have will only connect to the engine ECU so wont help in this case. But if he has any bother with engine light on in future it will work.

P, if i were you (or ratehr your lad), i would disconnect all the plugs and clean and dry them out.
Whilst this is being done, check all the fuses, basically, (Hopefully) if these are ok, them all that has occurred ithe SRS system has detected a fault (I dont think theres a "Coffee spilt all over me!" fault code (There should be along with coke/ fanta etc etc!), the system after a few runs (Ignition on / off etc etc), "should" then extinguish the fault light.
If not its like Dans said, of to a garage with a full system.
The only ones you can buy decent scanners for that have the Airbag system built in are VAG vehicles, some even come with a built in Service reset facility too.
Sorry mate, not much help but i hope theres no lasting damage and it turns itself off
(You could always try the Disconnect the batteyr for 15 - 30 mins once everything is clean / dry etc)
