I would personally pay to get them refurbed rather than using a kit, though as you say, it can work out a little expensive. Guy I used to refurb one of my alloys recently charged £50, but the job was top notch.
Just rememebr mate like with nearly alltypes of painting the most important step is the preperation.

as Rob said its preparation is the key, make sure the surface is fully clean and free of any dirt
