Do I need the crossover?
Hello.
I am about to tint my rear door windows (yes it is a 5 door ofcourse), and will be removing the door card and window in the process. Then I will also achieve access to the shit-speakers in the doors. I've got my hands on a Sony XSHT170SN set without the tweeters. See link below (text in Norwegian).

I do understand the reason with the crossover ofcourse, but is it really necessary to use it? I know I will get the high frequencies smashed through the bass/midtone speakers aswell. Advice needed.

I've done the smalles - most rear ones. It is to prevent the children's seats to overheat, and to quit using those damn plungershaders that fall off after 2 minutes. As a positive bi-effect, it looks quite cool aswell. :)

Re: Do I need the crossover?
If you had the tweeters then i would say yes to the crossovers, but u wont need the crossover without the tweeters, but i dont think that the sonys will sound better than your standard speakers without the tweeters. (if you get what i mean?)
Your standard speakers have a wider frequency range to accomodate the high frequency sounds that tweeters produce.
changing them for sony's wont improve the sound quality, unless of course the 5 door comes with separate tweeter/mid speaker? then leave the standard tweeter in place aswell as the sony's!

Re: Do I need the crossover?
I did some home testing, and as suggested, I drop the crossover. It was actually a nice place for it inside the door panel, but testing it on my home stereo, there was really little sound difference. Big difference from the old ones though, as they propably are made by toilet paper and paperclips. 10 times wheight difference. But ofcourse they are to be driven from the standard head unit, and will not give the best they can. The point was anyway to get a little bass/midtone help from the rear without getting insane from the poor, distorted sound from the OEM speakers.
Used my Fein Multimaster (god of tools) to trim the speaker mount/spacer, and the new ones fit straight in.

Hell. One of the speakers were blown. So much for thinking I did a good deal. On Monday someone at the car audio store is going to get keel-dragged (old Norwegian expression used when someone has for instance betrayed the captain).
