    Question Tyre sizes

My issue with my existing blades is that the ride is too noisey and hard. I can feel ALL the bumps in the road irrespective of size!

I currently have Dunlop Sport Maxx 215/45R17 91Y on all 4 corners.

If I was to change to 225/45R17 do you think this would make a difference? I don't need a spongey ride, just something a little softer. Or would changing the brand/tyre type make a difference? (or both, brand and size?!)

    Any thoughts most welcome!

Actually just been looking at my owners handbook - the normal tyres on a 17" wheel should be 87W weight rating, so perhaps with the 91Y it's firming it up too much.

The wider the tread pattern the more it follows the ruts and camber of the road and also using a 225 profile will make your speedo inacurate..I will look for a link to show you that one..but gave the same info to one of the scotish lads a while back..its quite surprising that just changing the profile will actually increase the diameter slightly as well..and make the speedo slow..[under read]

Wasnt the one I was looking for but give it a try..

    I make the 225/17 634.23mm.compared to the 215 at 625.09mm

    Tire size calculator

^ I expect you're thinking of this one.

Thanks for the heads up on the speedo issues. My logic is that given the speedo is inaccurate anyway, the differences between 225 and 215 are minimal especially when considered that my original size was 205/55R16.

Falken FK-452 seems to be a good tyre that is rated at 87Y so should in theory be softer on the sidewall, so I'm ear marking that as a possibilty at the moment.

Nope wasnt that one Innsy I was on the panda section on f/f at the time but as I dont go there much now I just couldnt be bothered to look..the one I gave gave the result tho for you..I think if you want good handling and comfort the same time then go back to the standard 15" wheel on the stilo..I had no issues with the 15's on mine and then changed to 17s and had all sorts of problems..

87 will feel softer than 91, so that's a good idea.

    I think that's true.
I used to have 91. But my new ones are 87. I don't know if that is the reason, but they are quite enough.

@Phil, switching to 15's is rather drastic isn't? I believe that a set of 16's would be more appropriate... Or switch to 18's and get yourself a couple of back problems lol!

The prob is with your tyre size insy on the 17s regardless you'll feel the bumps same prob I had with the stilo but for the sake of the looks I put up with it ......go to 16s and you'll be fine....there defo will be a difference with 91 vs 87 on the 17s.....but imo your best option is to drop to 16s (i ksay this cos I went fron 15" steelies to 17s changed the ride from good to bad)

right now my passat is rolling on 16s and she's comfy as heck wait till I put some 18s on hershe'll be rock hard but she'll look pretty :D

Do not compare the Stilo's ride quality with your Passat's....
It's at least unfair.......... to the VAG lol

esse, youve got to go atleast 19inch in the passat mate.
passat ride quality is amazing as standard. but yeah the stilo is better ......... lol
steve if your looking coilovers for the passat give me a shout, i can sort you out with some cheapy cheap!
to be honest i never look at the weights of tyres i just throw them on, i suppose the weights would make a bit of difference, but when your going low profile the difference will not be as noticeable when compared to a 55/60 sidewall profile.
