    Default gear/clutch problem

    hi,
can anyone tell me what the hell is it and how much roughly it will cost to sort out...
the thing is that i cant get the gears in and when you manage it the car gets somekinda whining noise, well it's there when it's not moving and youre in the neutral, but it stops when you push the clutch down also when it's off you can hear chime sound from under the car when changing the gears...
any help would be much appreciated.
    thanks.

    Cool Re: gear/clutch problem

If its the thrust bearing/release bearing you will get a whining/rotating sound when you push the clutch pedal to the floor and this is the bearing on the pressure plate grinding away because the lub has gone from inside te bearing..the sound will go when you lift your foot off the clutch pedal..if the bearing is starting to break down it will some times stick and judder as it jams on the pressure plate this then also buggers the pressure plate as well ..are you the same guy that posted on fiat forum earlier today ?peeps dont use the same user name some times..

yeah its him, had this on my schui, though, through added pressure the master cylinder split and the pedal went to the floor, kept having to pump the clutch to build pressure, and now it seems alfalfa is doing the same, naughty girly

indeed i am, but the thing is that the whining sound was without even touching the clutch, it only dissapeared when i used to push it down, well it was gone eventually, but it was hard to move the car from halt as it used to whine and cracle when doing it and only got up to 3rd gear and started to whine and cracle again if i tried to go on 4th gear...
well all them sounds are gone for now, but for how long
it looks like its working fine now, but i guess i need to a garage and see what they says, the only thing is i dont want to be ripped off as they usually do....
what should i expect them to say???
and the last thing where do i put that bloody gearbox oil? there are no oil tanks for it under teh bonnet is there?
    thanks guys

Wasnt referring to you on f/f cos bandido is also having a similar problem and I thought it might be that poster.. any road from what you are saying now it seems to be that the gear box may be the problem if it was the clutch I think it would have self destructed by now [stilo one isnt the best on the 1.6 and the diff is a weak link ] to get to the filler for the oil its on the side of the box and the drain is on the bottom..will have a look ans see if I can get you a diagram for that one.. if the box has been running with low or no oil the damage is already done and a new one might be on the cards.. only an inspection will reveal and diagnose the problem..ifits the box then a scrapyard second hand box will be your cheapest option..

OK eper view of the box and the filler hole is just on the bottom left of the rear section of the box ..filler plug is No 6..

well i've went to the ATM yesterday and they said that most likely its the clutch, they dont deal with it, so they told me to go to Mr. Clutch, where i phoned up and was told that it is my clutch(most likely again) and everything will be known as they will inspect the car, witch will be on tuesday. the price is 280 quid...
and yesterday it started being ludicrously noisy when my foot is off the clutch, also there is quite some smoke going off the hood and really nasty smell.... so i'm really hoping that it is clutch...

yeah that will be the clutch, its sounds like the release fork in the hydraulics isnt realeasing fully and your clutch is engaged ever so slightly all the time, that would explain the smell, the rattle will probably be bits of clutch?

but we will never fully know till you get it looked at. and since when did ATM stop looking at clutches, more like there another company scared of the stilo
