    Default Rear Axle Bushings.........update

Hi all, i got a mate of mine to pull the rear axle out of my stilo and get the bushings out, so tonight we went to the workshop and used a 20tonne press to press the bushings in, well it didnt go so smoothly, completely fooked the first bush on the press as we couldnt get it lined up correctly and just said fook it we'll press on. full 20tonne of pressure down on it after about half an hour the bush went in and it was all over the place. flattened the centre piece where the bolt goes through,
so we left that side and went to do the second one
we decided to try the vice and we got a big socket and lots of penetrating oil and a 4 foot long bar on the handle of the vice to apply massive amounts of pressure while turning. eventually we got the bush in,
so i have fooked one bushen will have to order another one tomorrow and have another try at it on friday when the workshop is free again. lets hope it will be second time lucky.

has anyone got any tips for me?

    Yer...
Have you tried using a vice a 4 foot bar and lots of penetrating oil?

Did you clean out the housings before putting the bushes back in? Why penetrating oil and not something decent like ZX-1 grease or summat along those lines mate

    Cool Re: Rear Axle Bushings.........update

Once you have the old bush out use a course half round file to clean up and slightly enlarge the aperture in the axle enough to make the pressing in of the bush easier..plenty of lube to help penetration does help as well...

it was cleaned out with emery paper just to get the sh1t out of it i must do that going to have to remove the bush i fooked and start again on that side with another bush. used penetrating oil as a handy lube. hard to beat a bit of lube to get into tight holes. lol

    Cool Re: Rear Axle Bushings.........update

What I meant was the axle could benefit from reaming..so the tolerance between the axle and bush is expanded..have a look at this..

When the rear bushes were done on mine (didn't really need it as it turned out, but hey ho) the mounting area was 'reamed' - well, honed really - to help get the bushes in. Pertinent axle area was then gently warmed whilst the bushes were bunged in bag in the freezer for 5 mins......
Went in first time on the press, with the assistance of a lube spray. Can't remember what the spray was, but it was 'bush friendly'.
'Bush friendly lube....' hmmmmm, I promise that's not a euphemism for anything else
