Brake Light Switch
Hi Guys,
Ive been having a spot of bother with the old Abarth of late. Getting the odd engine failure, gearbox failure, ASR/EBD whatever on the dash display. I also noticed that the cruise control didnt work either, and the selespeed would only shift up intermittently.
Tured out it was the brake light switch. As my brake lights were on permanently.
Anyway, Im skint at the minute so thought I would take the switch apart and fix it, save trekking to the stealers.
The switch comes out easy enough, just twist it and it releases from the pedal assembly.
You can see the exploded view of the switch internals on the attached picture - crap quality I know but you get the idea. Just be very careful when opening the switch, the plastic is quite brittle.
Once the switch was open the problem with my switch was the actual pin part (second from right). That pin can be extended and contracted - it has ridged sides and a clip to keep it at the desired length. For some reason in my case it was fully compressed to there wasnt enough length on it for the brake pedal movement to break the circuit as required. You can see the ridges down the side of the pin. if there arent many extend it.
Anyway, all I did was pull the entre out to extend the pin length. The re-assembled and put back in the car, works 100%.

Re: Brake Light Switch
I know mate I know - but I am just too lazy to go to the dealers, and last time I went for some Tutela (ATF type fluid) It took them three quarters of an hour to sort me out. I moaned so much they let me have it for free. (Evans Halshaw - Horsforth Leeds)

Re: Brake Light Switch
Nice one. Always great when you find a solution to something that doesn't require the help of a garage :)

Re: Brake Light Switch
Being a green person I was surprised to see a modern part like the switch being recyclable..I know you are all going to say hell he is showing his age but I can remember when many parts could be rebuilt..we didnt live in a chuck it away society back then and you saved a few bob on most repairs if you didnt want to buy a new part..
will take another closer look at the switch but I'm wondering if the nylon plunger pin is just a short piece of rod then you could actually replace it for another piece of the same diameter..I used to get all sizes of plastic/nylon rod from my local model shop..you could do an fsoc brake switch repair and replacement service Dan..Woot!!!
International man of mystery
Wit, sarcasm, you get it all from me..

Re: Brake Light Switch
The daft thing is there is nothing actually broken. I could have explained it a lot better if I get time I will take it out and take some better pictures.
Seriously, a trained monkey could do it, 10/15 minutes max.

I recently replaced my old switch for a new one £7 took A DAY got the old one out in 5mins ,,but could not get the new one in at all cursed and cursed hands ripped to bits back aching like hell
I dont give up easy but this little switch had me beat
So only then i compaired old with new and the new switch had 2mm that had to be trimmed from the end of the seating pins (where it locks in to keep tight to metal plate
