Selespeed Gearbox Problems
Hi all
Right here goes had my stilo abarth over a month now and not had any problems till last night. I broke down 50 mile from home was driving stopped at a set of lights went to pull away and the gearbox had gone into N and the dreaded gearbox failure came up on the dash. Now i can select any gears and all i get on the dash is gearbox failure but the car still runs has anyone got any ideas? the AA man had never came across one and phoned his technical people who basicly went throught the fuses then i got recovered home.
thanks phil

Re: Selespeed Gearbox Problems
Hello there,
When you say runs can you actually drive the car? Ideally you need it connecting to diagnostic equipment which will get you on the right track in no time. You can get gearbox failure from something so small as a faulty brake switch, pump realy or anything but you are really sort of guessing.
Alternatively if you cant select gears but the engine runs, it could be the pump, an actuator, pump relay, something very serious. If you can give us some more info we will be able to help a little more.

Re: Selespeed Gearbox Problems
You really need to connect the car to diagnostic equipment then really, the AA can usually do that and would have thought they might have done. If you can hear the pump prime thats one thing off the list but lots more..
If you have a laptop buy a VAGCOM 409.1 KKL Cable (about £10-15) and download Yani's excellent fiatecuscan software which will tell you what issues the ECU's know about.
Alternatively, where abouts are you, a fellow member may be able to help

Re: Selespeed Gearbox Problems
Ah that was my next question a family member has one of them leads for his passat will it work on the stilo? If so i will collect it after work and have ago is the software easy to use?

Re: Selespeed Gearbox Problems
It will yes so long as its the 409.1 KKL type which is what most people have.
You may need to change some settings for the virtual com port, but try it first and if not change the 'latency timer' setting to a lower value.
Theres quite a lot of helpful info on the website. Let us know how ou get on

EDIT: If you have any bother read this, explains it all.. http://www.fiatecuscan.net/HowToUse.aspx

Re: Selespeed Gearbox Problems
Good stuff. Without that sensor the car doesnt know how fast the clutch is spinning so it cannot open the throttle the correct amount before engaging the clutch. Did the software say anything about the state when the fault was logged?
I would personally find it and check the connection to it first before buying one. Ill have a look on eper and elearn and see what the rough cost is.
Unless someone else beats me to it.

Re: Selespeed Gearbox Problems
Well i see the error and cleared it was the only one in the system but its there all the time as soon as i clear the fault its back again. It was raining last night i think there is only the one sensor on the front of the box so i might try and get to the wires with a hairdryer. Then make sure the connection is good before buying one
