Question Over heating but no in cabin heating

    Hi guys
Excuse my English please, its not my 1st language

I have just bought a 52 Reg Stilo with 68K miles on clock. Its 1.6 16v Dynamic (I think I have spelt it right)
I took my daughter to the next town and car started over heating, before this the temp guage use to stay only till half but than it went over 3/4th even near to red mark and there is no heat inside the car

I have searched the forum but can not seems to find anything which will explain whats wrong.
Please if you indicate any parts please please if possible include any picture or if you know the thread I need to look, please guide me towards it

I have read something about BLEEDING the system but couldn't understand what to do, must be my understanding of language.

    I will be very thankful

Bleeding the system is usual after a coolant change..you might have an air lock in the system which is causing that but two/three other things come to mind that can also cause over heating..

    [1] thermostat..

    [2] head gasket failure..

    [3] water pump failure..

Thermostat is item 6 in this diag and if stuck shut then the whole unit will need replacement..also if it stuck shut it can cause the second problem..blown head gasket..if its a head gasket problem the whole cylider head will need to come off and the gasket replaced and the head checked for warping..water pump is on the left hand side of the 1.6 engine and fortunately for you if its the problem runs on an auxilery belt and not the cam belt but a small strip down and search will be necessary to determin this..pump is SGR10402 in the diag..

Might also be a good idea if you check all hoses and radiator for leaks..

Thanks PNL for the reply, I am just shocked that why is this happened. I bought this car last week and bringing back covered about 35 motor way miles, guage went upto half way and stayed there all the way. 2 days later took my daughter for her theory test which was roughly 15 miles one way, going there no problem but coming back almost near home guage started playing between 1st line after half and 3/4.
Today on my way to work which is only mile and half, for a mile temp guage didn't even move but then it started rising like a wall clock, constant and steady till it got 3/4 way and thats when I arrived at work so switched engine off, coming back from work same and after parking the car I could hear hissing noise like pressure escaping from under bonnet.
I am really worried to the least as to be honest I can't afford any expencive work done on the car, even bought the car with loan
    How can I change coolant?
Sorry for long essay but I am a bit desperate and worried. Thanks

Well its more to do with age and possible lack of maintanance from the previous owner/s and with 68K on the clock this kind of thing is there just waiting to happen..last Jan my youngest boy bought a car that turned out to have lack of maintanance there wasnt even any antifreeze in the car the water in the system resembled mud rather than coolant it caused a water pump failure for him with just 50K on the clock of that car..no point in changing coolant in yours until you find the cause of the problem because you will be flushing you hard earned down the drain..you need to get checked all hoses and connections..water pump needs to be checked over that its working and leak free and radiator to.. there is always a possibility that the heater matrix might have a leak so the whole system needs looking at..thermostat sounds as tho its the possible culprit and if so will need changeing [quite an involved job] and you will have to get the cylinder compessions checked or a sniff test done for a possible head gasket blow [dont drive the car if you have that one expensive to replace] you will have to spend some money on this car there is no way out of it I am sorry to say with constant water loss and over heating + continual driving the engine will soon give up the ghost..

    Thanks alot for your help

So what do you suggest where should I start from? Or is it all professional's job? i.e I definately have to take the car to garage
Just one more thing or two, last nite while driving ALTERNATOR FAIL came up on screen and went off after few seconds than it was keep coming and going
and finally hole in the exhaust, is it a MOT failure?

    Thank you very much

Are you mechanically minded ? have you done any home maintanance on cars at all ?..if the answers tick the NO box then a trip to your local garage will be in order..outline the problems your having and that your losing water and he will do the rest ..ask him for a cooling systems check over and cost [quote] for any possible items that may need replacement..elctrical problems are a big minus on the stilo they come up with quite a few..while at the garage you can also ask him to do a check on the battery and charging system of the car..quite often on the stilo you get waning messages up on the dash through a poor battery voltage..so your battery might need replacement as well..

First off, is there enough coolant in it? Lack of coolant will cause heating system to drop off and then over heating.

Could be a radiator leak as they're common to fail (mines slowly on its way out).

Thanks a lot guys for the help, well you hit the nail with loss of coolant. This morning I went to check the coolant level and shocked to see the bottle (attached to radiator) bone dry. Well got a big jug full of water all disappear, got another one that went too so 3rd one finally filled the bottle. I might have filled the bottle above MAX level. Took it to local garage who found the clip a bit lose where water was dripping not gazing out. After fixing that no more heating problem except when the car was on ramp they found 2 tyre under legal limit and back box needs changing :( not a happy chappy as I was just thinking to get the car MOTd and park it up as tax finishes end of this month and can't afford to tax but got a quote for backbox fitted £65, 2 tyres part worn £20 each + MOT cost. Absolute devostated.

Now only errors left on monitor is AIRBAG FAILURE STOP ENGINE, just have to see if any errors come back
I am really thankful to you guys for the support you provided here

Thanks for the reply, well since the last post I had to park the car sue to no funds to put the tax and due to work commitment I wasn't able to pay any attention to car at all. Yesterday got time to went to check the car to find battery was dead so asked a neighbour to let me jump start the car which he did but few things seemed wrong
    1. a lot of white smoke
    2. Engine management light came on
    3. and the worst there was no water again in the radiator bottle or engine ( filled it up again with 3 jugs full of water)

Now my question is since the last fill I hardly used the car so where is the water gone?
I can't have gone in engine (in case the head gasket is gone) because the engine wasn't running or am I wrong to think that
Really worried now. One more thing I have notice a lot of brown muddy / sticky substance under the engine oil refil cap + some mayo (white cream).
Is it just condensation or am I looking for a big repair bill?

Really appreciate your help and thanks in advance
