Just tried again with the galletto on bench, all I get is :-
Start Data Reading - BOOT MODE INACTIVE
Tried forcing it into bootmode which you apprantly connecting pin 20 to mass (gnd). Doesnt work.
Rob, when you do 1.4 stilos with your kit, do you do them on the bench or in the car through the obd port?

Re: Stilo 1.4 ECU Q's
Ive just realised that it the 1250 apparantly doesnt work with XP SP3. So ill chuck win2000 sp4 on a spare hdd tonight and try it with that.
There was a FTDI driver on the computer from a serial adapter so its just used the driver from that...

Re: Stilo 1.4 ECU Q's
Ive given up on the 1.4 16v ECU for now. Im sure it must be programmed in the vehicle as I cant get it to play ball at all. I bit the bullet and had a go with my car.
Ill put the info up below just so people know it can be done. This is just the start of the whole process - just because the ECU can be read doesnt mean you can remap/chip/whatever your car. The hard part is actually finding the tables that contain the information and when they have been changed recalculating the checksum - something which is way above my head and best left to the professionals out there. If you need a newbie guide for something like this then you shouldnt be doing it...
Anyway...
Firstly for the Galletto to read the car, the ECU must be placed in bootmode. This makes the ECU wake up using code intergrated in the ECU's processor, rather than than contained in its flash which allows the Galletto tool to communicate with the ECU.
To do this on most Fiat/Alfa/Lancia's with Bosch ECU's you connect Pin 20 on the ECU to ground. See the diagram below :-

And should look something like this :- (notice the black wire - I connected it to the battery negative terminal)

Then back in the car, make sure the Galletto is connected to the OBD port, and run the software.

Choose the car in the list, then turn on the ignition. Because the ECU isnt actually running the actual ECU software, the dash will go through loads of warnings such as loose connection, ASR, ESP, etc etc.
When the cluster has finished chelping, just follow click ECU Data and the ecu data section on screen should populate with information from your ECU.
When finished click Read ECU and choose a filename and then click OK.
It should now read your cars ECU and will take just over a minute.

You should now have a 512Kb file on your hard drive (524,288 bytes). Just to make sure I read my ECU three times about 15 minutes apart and compared the files to make sure I had a good dump:). I then compared the file with a diff utility to make sure they were exactly the same, which they were.
Have fun

Re: Stilo 1.4 ECU Q's
Hi Dans
Busy busy busy, but excellent post there my friend, you may wish to add the consideraiton of a stabilised battery charger / conditioner whilst running the software.
Saves a red face if it drops whilst reading / writing etc etc

That post from Dan made me eyes bulge and head swim..nice to have people like him on this side that can do this kind of stuff to help us mere mortals..:)

Re: Stilo 1.4 ECU Q's
@Rob - What would you recommend as a safe battery voltage?
I was going to add that bit about the voltage when I got round to the writing bit later on. Mine was floating aroud 12.6v with the fan running (ooops) and it still read fine. Ill research the relevant fuses for cooling fan/radio and get that added in.
Think ill add stuff in here as I go then update it as a guide when ive done.
Needless to say boys and girls, if this doesnt make sense dont even bother - get in touch with a pro like Rob (Elitetuning). And make sure you laptop battery is charged! or plugged in!

Re: Stilo 1.4 ECU Q's
Hi Dan
I use the CTEK Zafir 90 Battery Charger / Conditioner, as it not only charges (obviously) but it will maintain the battery voltage. I belive it maintains on Cars / Light Vans at around 14.4V.
An excellent piece of kit i might add.
It will charge and condition also completely flat batteries also, and you can leave it hooked up to vehicles for upto 6 months to maintain the battery. (Even has a special lead to connect to your vehicle battery for quick dis/connection)
Thumbs up from rob

Re: Stilo ECU / Cheapy Galletto Clone Adventures
Ive not made any progress on this as yet as I am trying to find someone who is reliable and knows what they are doing to create a file for my car.
Ive emailed a a few companies about this, but had very little back from anywhere reputable.
Reading on the forum rob mentioned earlier chiptuners.org , it would seem some guys on the civic forums have loaded an amateur map onto their new civics... not without issue it would seem. Quite a read lol:)
http://www.civinfo.com/forum/engines...-2-diesel.html
This is certainly not my aim and anything I get written for my car I wont be making available to download. I will however compare the changes and discuss them to some degree to further our knowledge about how the ecu/injection system works.
