as i'm getting deeper into this i'm starting to want one, but obviously i've seen loads of messin with them, even breaking the car down, is any of them are reliable enough to buy it and just install it, or i would need to make some heat shields and so forth to keep the temps down, as i had a look to k&n 57i one, it doesnt look like a bit hassle, but will it do any good rather than mocking the car up?
sorry for being so lame about all of it, but i thought you dont need to even take out the old air filter out, now i see that you do...![]()

The problem I had with the 57i is that the cone comes directly off the original intake pipe meaning said cone sits right on top of the rocker cover and above the manifold. There is a cold air feed going to it, but it looked like a terrible set up so wanted to get something better. GSR are one route, but that's been gone into before - expensive and customer service of the suck variety.
Depending on what engine you have, the K&N might be okay but it'll be the same situation if you have a 1.4. I've heard a Stilo 1.6 with a 57i and it sounded great, but not sure what the performance gains were, though in general induction kits don't offer massive gains in power, it's more about torque and drive-ability or providing a better base for other mods like remapping.
The way mine will be set up will mean that the cone is between the engine and the battery, slightly more away from the main heat sources and nearer the original cold air source. It should be far better than a 57i and probably be a little louder due to the twin cone set up
As you can imagine from reading this thread, it's not the easiest thing to get your head around. If you're making your own, I'd say the main thing to watch is that you don't actually end up taking performance away from the engine accidentally. That's where helpful members of the forum who are more in the know can guide you as to what's right and wrong![]()
indeed, as mine's 1.6, the induction kits from fleebay come about 70 quid and as far as i saw all the instalation is quite easy, but again, what will the power gain will be, obviously remap will come handy afterwards and it's just too many companies doing them, too much choice witch could be bad, and the last thing is the prices witch varies thoughout all of them, but the most important thing is the power gain overall, obviously i would rather spend 100-150 pounds on a thing that will bring me 30hp after remap rather than spending 50 and getting just 10hp after the remap![]()

Power gain from induction as quoted from GSR is around 8%, which is about 5hp for me, about 8 for you though apparently that's optimistic. With a remap, induction, exhaust and good condition engine (serviced, etc), you could well get that 30hp gain, but that's just a guess. I think with the mods I'll have plus induction, I may have gained a few hp, but I'm just wanting to make it more drivable and basically more fun to live with till next year when the finance goes bye bye.
As I said before though, induction alone isn't going to provide big power gains. It just provides another base to get a power gain - I heard it once on a High Octane dvd I was watching, it's not just about the bolt ons, it's about the tuning. If your engine's not performing well on it's own, the mods won't do the job your wanting them to.
On the topic of induction on a 1.6 Stilo though - have a look on Youtube for clips, they sound rather good
indeed it does![]()
but that's where it might end... witch wouldnt be an option, i'm not too keen to put ~300 quid to get more sound of the engine, witch would be preferable, and ~5-10bhp, obviously it might go a bit further, but i think as they say: you dont risk, you dont drink champagne, or something like that (there's a saying like that in Lithuania)

Well, the home made kit I'm building will cost me around £50 so not really breaking the bank. Don't know how much something similar would cost for a 1.6, but could be worth a look as an alternative to a GSR/K&N 57i/Typhoon or other. A remap anywhere will cost between £150 and £200 if I remember correctly and a decent custom exhaust system around £300. Basically if you're wanting the extra power, it's going to cost and on a naturally aspirated engine it's always going to cost more for smaller gains. At least, that's what I've always found.
i realy cant wait to see this. tbh i dont know if i would put an induction kit on my 1.2
i had a little williams clio replica (1.2 8v) i just ran it with the airbox off with a pair or tights over the intake pipe it did sounds the part.

Did something similar years ago in the first car I drove - a 1.0 Uno. Was back when I was 17 and I drove like the stereotypical teenager
I'm looking forward to it as well. Have heard what a 1.4 sounds like with a GSR kit on it and mine should sound similar, perhaps even louder due to the twin cone![]()
