Life with the tuning unit 115jtd
Hi peeps i thought i would do a quick run down on the tuning units for the jtd just incase others are waiting to purchase.
anyways, as many ouf you know ive only had the 115bhp jtd for a short while and have been very happy with it, but since i got the tuning unit im VERY happy with it.
All i can say is VROOOMMMMMM, the car shifts!!!
Before the tuning unit the car was a bit asmatic until approx 2.2k- 2.5k rpm then took off, Well now the power band has widened down to 1.5k rpm then you get the usual kick from the turbos around the 2.3k rpm.
The power delivery is far more positive and constant.
before the box i was getting around 46.7 mpg stablized over 300mile run - which isnt that bad considering i own the multiwagon truck.
Now after 200 mile run ive just clocked in 54.3mpg (again taken when the mpg has stablized)!!!
Let me point out that the car was driven easy with the economy runs, no high revving, and i never strayed over 60mph.
The unit itself come with everything you need - leads, box and instructions, the box is about the size of an average mobile phone (3 match boxes side by side is probo a better comparison).
The leads are all in the kit and are very easily fit (although a bit fiddly to get the ones of your car especially if its sub zero temps)
One thing i will point out which may cause some head scratching for some is which way around the leads go on your common rail, check the lead you remove and you will see a read one under the protective sleeve, now look at the new lead and make sure the red is on the same side as they can be fitted the wrong way round. once they are connected, a MUST is some tape, the last thing you want is the new cable coming loose whilst your doing 70mph down the motorway.
I found the best place to put the unit is next to the expansion bottle under the bonnet strut. i ran the cable round the suspension strut and placed it there. Ive also put the thing in two water tight bags and sealed it up so any water ingress into the engine bay wont affect the electronics inside.
Setting up the unit is easy, Plug and Play is the key word here - all you do is turn your ignition on (dont start) and leave it for 1 min, then start the engine and again leave it running for 1 min without touching the accelerator - this is to calibrate the unit.
Basically that is it.
Now if you are not happy with the car, ie not quick enough or its smoking (unburned fuel) then the unit can be adjusted to your liking. there is a number settings in there which are done with normal jumper that you will find on the back of an ide hard drive.
It comes preset to 4 (halfway) if you move it up to 5 it will increase power move it down to 3 it will decrease (thats how i understand it anyways).
I have been playing with mine for just over a week now and have settled with setting 4 - each and every car will be different though so my findings may not be the same as yours.
In my case i put it to 5 and i found the car and a very slight flat spot with smoke - also my fuel consumption changed - it dropped to 42.5mpg (over 212miles). But i must emphasise that this may not be the same on all cars my car is a multiwagon so its setup probo is completly different (computer wise) than the 3dr. That is the reason why these units are adjustable.
If you decide to play with the settings you MUST do the re programing like you did you you first fitted it.
Ive never had a car remapped, so i cannot really say how they match up but i personally think this gives the best of both worlds, you set the car up to YOUR liking and can be very easily removed if its not to your liking.. for my money this makes much more sence and is cheaper!.
any questions feel free to ask and i will try to answer them.
christ ive only owned the car for a couple of weeks and clocked over 1500miles!! no wonder my old car had such high mileage.

Re: Life with the tuning unit 115jtd
So I've got a few questions on this...
How much is this tuning box (I've seen a range from under a hundred, to around £300...Often the cheapest option is just that for a reason)
And does everyone tell their ins. company-and how does it affect premiums?
The 150bhp (and 305ft-lbs) multijet has a 0-60 of around 8.5 which is where most of the remaps/tuning boxes I've seen put the jtd-does that seem about right?
Fuel consumption....is it the same if you drive the same (well similar) and how do you resist the italian devil on your shoulder?
Cheers guys
